12 small dogs for flat living

As it’s World Animal Day today, we've got 12 gorgeous dogs just right for city and flat living.

Did you know that 29% of UK adults own a dog. 36% of all owners acquired their pet in the last three years, meaning that 8.3 million pets (4.1 million dogs, 3.7 million cats and 580,000 rabbits) have been acquired since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

1 Basset Hound

A low-key and gets less active with age, the basset enjoys a daily walk but doesn’t need a ton of exercise. Height is up to 15 inches and weight is between 40–65 pounds.

2 Bichon Frise

Rarely growing over a foot in height and weighing in at just between 12–18 pounds, the Bichon Frise is a dog seemingly designed for city living. They need lots of exercise and playtime and prefer a garden area. Not great at being left alone, and while some small dogs can be nippy barkers, the Bichon isn’t too noisy.

3 Bulldog

Another medium-sized pooch that doesn't need much space is the Bulldog. They are very good-natured, loving, low-maintenance and are fairly quiet as long as you don’t mind some snoring. They weigh between 40–50 pounds and reach 14–15 inches in height.

4 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Even a small flat is fine for a happy-go-lucky cute and cuddly Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - but be aware, like many toy breeds, they can get very attached to their humans, so they’re generally not suited to being left alone and thrive on companionship. They reach a grand height of between 12–13 inches and weigh about 13–18 pounds.

5 Chihuahua

This little dog with a big attitude and personality can get a little barky at the front door, but think of it as a built-in intruder alert. They have a high energy level, but their tiny size means a flat will be fine for them to burn it off.  Reaching between 5–8 inches and up to 6 pounds, they are definitely in the Toy range.

6 French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is currently the second most popular dog in the UK, having been the top dog in the French countryside since the 1800s. They require little exercise, love being in close quarters with their owners, and rarely bark. Between 11 and 13 inches, they weigh under 28 pounds.

7 Havanese

Named after Cuba's capital city, the Havanese are born to live in the city. This 10 pound dog only needs moderate exercise and are otherwise happy just to explore your home. They're also not big barkers, but shouldn't be left alone for more than 3–4 hours.

10-pound

8 Italian Greyhounds

Miniature versions of the greyhound, weighing in at around 10 pounds vs the 60 pounds, they will love the occasional sprint in a park but will be the ultimate couch potato when back at home.

9 Maltese

With their famous white coats, be prepared to do a lot of grooming, but these incredibly charming and playful dogs actually make fantastic watchdogs so they have a tendency to bark at your neighbours. Reaching up to 7–9 inches in height and about 7 pounds in weight, these little delights love to sit in your lap and give you lots of affection.

10 Pug

These even-tempered dogs are great for families with children and who can’t find their little smooshed faces comical. They are love bugs, perfectly happy living in a flat. Don’t overdo it, but keep them exercised, and then they'll be happy napping on the couch. They will sneak food, so watch your plate. They reach about 10-13 inches and weigh about 14–18 pounds.

11 Shih Tzu

Originating from Tibet, these small, quiet, calm and easy-going dogs were originally bred to live in Chinese palaces, so they need relatively little time outdoors and are perfectly content living in a flat. Their name means “little lion”, but they only reach about 9–10 inches in height and between 9–16 pounds.

12 Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers may be energetic, but due to their diminutive size, most of their exercising can be done indoors. They are also happy being left alone for long periods, although some Yorkies do have a tendency to bark, so beware if you have thin walls and impatient neighbours
